Nine Gifts of the Spirit

There are nine gifts of the Holy Spirit: Faith, Power, Healing, Wisdom, Knowledge, Discernment, Prophesy, Tongues and Interpretation of Tongues as listed in (1 Corinthians 12:1-11)

The gifts of the Spirit are categorized into 3 distinct groups:

Gifts that enable us to KNOW
Gifts that enable us to SPEAK
Gifts that enable us to ACT

1. Gifts that enable us to know supernaturally are The Word of Wisdom, The Word of Knowledge, and The Discerning of Spirits. These are also known as the gifts of Revelation and Information.

For flesh and blood has not revealed it unto you, but my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 16:17)

1) Word of Wisdom

A word of wisdom is a supernatural revelation of God's will or purpose in using all of the other gifts. A word of wisdom will reveal to the believer when, how, and where to effectively use any one or combination of the other gifts. It is not man's wisdom, but the wisdom that comes from God, revealed to man by the Holy Spirit. An example of God's wisdom is recorded in (Matthew 22:15-22) as Jesus addresses the question of paying tribute to Caesar.

2) Word of Knowledge

All knowledge is with God.

In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Colossians 2:3)

and comes from God.

Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:4)

The Holy Spirit imparts to believers words of knowledge as He determines for the edification of the body of Christ. The Holy Spirit can impart to someone the "Word of Knowledge" which would be facts from God about people, places, things and even events which a person could not possibly know unless God revealed them to him, e.g when the Holy Spirit revealed to Peter in (Acts 5) that Ananias and Sapphira had lied about the amount of money they received for property they sold. Peter could not know that by human means.

A word of knowledge can also come through visions, or even in physical sensations such as feeling someone else's pain as a result of injury or sickness. It represents information presented that only God could have known under the circumstances, as in many cases where the Lord reveals a disease or affliction not otherwise known by the person operating in the gift. A person operating in word of knowledge is also able to reveal the deepest thoughts and desires of the heart. (1 Corinthians 14:25) says: And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth. This gift often operates with the gifts of "discerning of Spirits" and "healing". Whenever a word of knowledge is given, healing usually comes, whether it is physical or spiritual. Also, I have noticed that a great increase in faith occurs, just as in the story of the woman at the well in Samaria. After Jesus revealed truths about her personal life, she believed in Him and testified of Him. The bible says, many were saved (John 4:7- 42). I have personally prayed with people and I feel their pain or their fear, anxiety etc. This is how the Holy Spirit reveals to me how to pray for them or what to deliver them from. Many times, He would just tell me in words, or show me a vision.

3) Discerning of Spirits

The bible warns us: Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. (1 John 4:1)

This gift is the supernatural revelation or insight into the spirit realm to detect spirits (both good and evil) and distinguish them and their plans. Most diseases and illnesses are a result of attacks by spirits of infirmity that manifest into a physical or mental condition. Jesus said "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil" (1 John 3:8), and Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father (John 14:12). We are to do what Christ did and destroy the works of the devil.

Jesus delivered the young boy in Mark Chapter 9 of a dumb and deaf spirit that resulted in severe mental illnesses

(Mark 9: 17-29): When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, You deaf and dumb spirit, I charge you, come out of him, and enter no more into him. And the spirit cried and rent him sore, and came out of him. And he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead. But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose. [v. 25-27]

The Lord delivered a woman whom a spirit of infirmity had bent over bodily for eighteen years.

And behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could not lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity. (Luke 13:11-12)

Not only will the Holy Spirit allow us to discern Spirits after they have manifested on the body, but He will allow us to discern and deliver those who are bound by Spirits of pride, greed, grieving, envy, anger, rejection, lust, jealousy, divination, coveteousness and all such evils of the heart.

Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved." 18She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her. (Acts 16:16-18)

Also, the bible speaks of Mary, having been delivered of seven spirits. We know that Mary was not spoken of as being physically or mentally ill, so we can say that these were spirits dealing with wickedness of the heart. Jesus also addressed a rich young ruler in Luke Ch 13, discerning spirits of pride and greed in him.

I have many times, while ministering to someone, been shown by the Holy Spirit, through visions and the word of knowledge, areas throughout this person's life where a particular spirit has been operational. The Holy Spirit would then identify this spirit, and once exposed, the person is then delivered from this particular spirit or group of spirits.

2. Gifts that enable us to speak supernaturally are The Gift of Prophecy, The Gift of Tongues and The Gift of Interpretation of Tongues. These are also known as the gifts of edification and inspiration.

Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts. (Zechariah 4:6)

4) The Gift of Prophesy

The gift of prophesy is a supernatural utterance given by the Holy Spirit in the person's own language. It is the divine miracle whereby words come directly from God through a person for a particular person, group of people, or the entire body of Christ for edification, exhortation, and comfort. It also predicts a future event. Prophesy must always align with God's word. It brings a "now" or "future word" that further reveals God's heart, having it's foundation already established in the Word.

(1 Corinthians 14:3) But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

The gift of prophesy is for every believer and Paul encourages believers to desire this gift as it benefits all.

(1 Corinthians 14:1) Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

(1 Corinthians 14:4) He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church

The Lord himself used this gift many times during his three year ministry on earth. He predicted many events in the new Testament, including his death and resurrection.

He predicts Peters denial as recorded in all four gospels (Matthew 26:34; Mark 14:30; Luke 22:34; John 13:38)

He encourages his disciples in (John 16:33)

A person prophesying must continually cleanse themselves and pray for God to search their hearts and reveal the wickedness of the heart. They must constantly be aware that they can prophesy from a) God's Spirit b) Any evil spirit . They must pray that God covers the ears and eyes to their heart with His precious blood, that not one word prophesied be outside what His Holy Spirit gives and not one word more or one word less be spoken apart from what the Holy Spirit speaks.

On the other hand, a person receiving a prophesy must always test the spirit behind the prophesy before receiving it.

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. (John 4:1)

5) The Gift of Tongues

And these signs shall follow them that believe. In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. (Mark 16:17)

The gift of tongues is a supernatural utterance given by the Holy Spirit to all believers, whereby the Spirit of the Lord speaks in diverse languages through a believer. The word says,"these signs shall follow them that believe".

These can be a known language foreign to the believer, or an unknown supernatural language not known to man, a heavenly language. In the case of it being a heavenly language, there can be no translation, only interpretation. Someone can speak the same words over and over and it will have a different meaning everytime they speak it. Usually if you are focused and pray for it, you will receive the interpretation in your understanding.Paul says..13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also (1 Corinthians 14:13,15)

There are three types of tongues:

Personal Tongues:

Through the Holy Spirit, we are given a prayer or angelic language by which our spirit prays directly to God for us, led by the Holy Spirit. When you pray in the Spirit or speak in your prayer or angelic language, your spirit is praying mysteries your mind cannot conceive nor understand.

For he that speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not unto men, but unto God; for no man understands him; howbeit in the spirit he speaks mysteries. He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself. For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays (1 Corinthians 14: 2, 4, 14)

(Romans 8:26) also speaks of the gift of tongues being used as a prayer language in the Holy Spirit. Likewise the Spirit helps our infirmities. For we know not what we should pray for as we ought. But the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Also (Jude 20)>: But you, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.

Tongues for the body of Christ

Tongues spoken for the edification of the body of Christ can be interpreted. These usually are spoken by a person giving a prophesy. Either the same person will give the interpretation of the prophesy in his or her native language, or someone else in the church will interpret so everyone can understand and be edified.

Spiritual Warfare Tongues

This tongue is usually a language the believer does not understand, but God and demons understand. It is usually used when your spirit, led by the Holy Spirit battles principalities, powers of darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places.

Tongues are a sign for unbelievers. Because it is a supernatural miracle of God, unbelievers will hear and believe.

(1 Corinthians 14:22)
Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers

6) The Gift of Interpretation of Tongues

Wherefore let him that speak in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. (1 Corinthians 14:13-14)

This gift is given for the interpretation of any of the tongues mentioned above. Regardless of it being a foreign language to man or a heavenly language, a person operating in this gift will be given the interpretation of these tongues by God, whether the tongues were spoken by the same person or a different person. I have seen and experienced the gift of tongues and interpretation of tongues operating together almost always, except with personal tongues. But even with this, I find, if you pray for the interpretation, God will give you the understanding of your personal tongues.

3. Gifts that enable us to act supernaturally are The Gift of Faith, The Workings of Miracles, and The Gifts of Healings. These are also known as the gifts of Power and Demonstration

And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power. That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:4-5)

7) The Gift of Faith

If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence from yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. (Matthew 17:20) Faith is the supernatural ability to believe God without human doubt, unbelief, and reasoning. Every man has been dealt the measure of faith.(Romans 12:3) It is not a lack of faith that prevents anyone from operating in gifts of the Holy Spirit, or to receive from blessings from God. It is because of doubt, unbelief, and human reasoning and logic. Our faith must be in God and His power only, not in ourselves. The word says, we can do nothing on our own, but we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. All it takes is faith to move in the power God gave us. The Bible says So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17) It takes knowing the word of God and reprogramming your mind until you can come to the complete knowledge of God's will and promises for you (Romans 12:2). However, like anything else, faith must be exercised in order to be strengthened. Renewing your mind will set you on your way to removing fear, doubt, and unbelief from your mind, but this will be useless if you are not willing to step out in faith and exercise the power available (as the Spirit leads). Faith is not a passive word, but one of action. I will show you my faith by my works. (James 2:18). The word works literally means "corresponding action". If you have faith (meaning you believe), then you must act on your belief. There cannot be faith without works. The word says in (James 2:26) For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Faith is revelation from God, when you know that you know, regardless of what your senses tell you. Our unbelief comes from our carnal nature in that we've been programmed to operate by our senses instead of in our spirits. All of us have the faith to do the works of Christ--as Jesus said, "If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, nothing shall be impossible to you." Our unbelief, fear, doubt, and unwillingness to walk in the Spirit is what hinders us from receiving many of God's promises, and operating in the power of God. When the Lord, in (Matthew 17:19-20) was asked by His disciples Why could we not cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief. For verily I say unto you, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Jesus didn't say "Because of your lack of faith." It was because of their unbelief. As I mentioned in a previous message, when you get to the point where your faith in God's word is more a reality than what your senses detect, you will be operating the gift of faith.

All of the gifts operate by faith for God is not moved by need, but by faith and without faith it is impossible to please Him (Hebrews 11:6)

8) The Workings of Miracles (Power)

Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. (Romans 15:19)

Working of miracles is the supernatural ability or power to intervene in the ordinary course of nature and transcend natural laws if necessary. In addition to healing and casting out devils, which were miracles themselves, Jesus performed many other miracles like in (John 2) when He turned water into wine. Some of His other miracles were: calmed the winds and sea (Matthew 8:26); walked on water (Matthew 15:25); fed 5,000 with five loaves and two fishes (Matthew 14:15); escaped from an angry mob (Luke 4:28-30); raised the dead (John 11:44); made a fig tree barren (Mark 11:14, 20); and many others. Jesus was not the only miracle worker in the New Testament. After leading an Ethiopian eunuch to Christ, Phillip was translated from the Gaza area to Azotus (Acts 8:39-40). Both apostles Peter and Paul raised people from the dead (Acts 9:40; 20:9-12), and the Bible says the God performed special miracles by the hands of Paul (Acts 19:11).

9) The Gift of Healing

And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people (Matthew 4:23)

Healing is the supernatural ability to heal all manner of sicknesses and diseases without human aid or medicine. The Bible says there are gifts (plural) of healing. When we examine the Bible we learn that Jesus healed people of all physical (Matthew 4:24), spiritual (John 8:3-11 the adulterous woman), emotional (Luke 7:37-47 the woman with the alabaster box), and mental conditions (Matthew 17:15-18 the lunatic boy). Healing is a gift, like all the other gifts, given to all believers. Everyone should operate in the gift of healing since the gifts are given for the edification of the body of Christ and also sometimes for unbelievers to come into the knowledge of Jesus and His saving grace. Not only is Healing a very visible miracle for unbelievers, it is also one that most edifies the Church. Also, Healing like other gifts, is a sign that someone has truly received Christ as their savior (Mark 16:17,18) 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

(Acts 28:9)

So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:

(Acts 28:8)

And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him. Healing is one of the gifts of the Spirit that is the most widely demonstrated as a demonstration of the Power of the Spirit after the word is preached.

(Luke 9:6) And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where. (Matthew 9:35)

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people
